Facebook’s Latest News Feed with ‘Story Bumping’ Feature
Several changes have been made by Facebook in its news feed Algorithm. The main objective of this algorithm is to provide the right content at the right time and to the right people. This will only help you see the story of your interests, like :-
- How frequently do you interact with the person who posts the story?
- How many shares, comments and likes the post is receiving?
- If more photos are liked by you then you will be receiving more photos in your news feed.
- If any people have reported or hidden the posts.
The Purpose of News Feed
The main aim of the News Feed is to provide important stories to the people without missing any of them, by delivering the right content to the right people and that too at the right time. News Feed will show all the posts what people want to see, want to read them and all in a particular order.
Every time when you visit News Feed, you will notice that on average there are 1,500 potential stories like from friends, pages, people you follow and many of you doesn’t find time to see them all. All these stories comprise of everything such as picnic photos that is posted by a friend to an acquaintance checking into a hotel.
Because of so many stories, there is a possibility that people might miss something they really wanted to view if the News Feed displayed an unranked and a continuous stream of information. Ranking is not perfect, but if the posts are shown in chronological order and the ranking is stopped, then the number of stories what people comments and likes decreases.
Let people decide with whom and what to connect with by listening to the feedback from various users. Because it becomes difficult for the News feed that which of those 1,500 stories to show? Thus, the news feed decide from the likes what people make as well as understands from that what people want to see. And when people hide something, the news feed understands from that and displays less content related to that post in the future.
This way, they prioritize an average of 350 out of 1500 stories to display each day.
New Update: Story Bumping
“Story Bumping is a tweak to Facebook’s sorting algorithm that will begin surfacing content you missed to the top of your News Feed.”
When you do not check your news feed for some time, then it is possible that you miss some interesting posts, as they move down in your new feed. For this disadvantage only, the Facebook came up with the new update added to their algorithm called ‘Story Bumping’.
Because of this update, people do not have to scroll much to see their interesting posts, as they will reappear at the top of their news feed. And it is obvious that brilliant posts have more chance to be seen by more people.
Thus, with the continuous improvement in the Facebook News Feed and with time to time updates in the sorting algorithm of Facebook, this will help in displaying stories that, which story should appear first.
